As a part of the Accelerated Reading program, the students are aiming to read more than 2,500 books this school year
DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School is aiming to read 2,500 books throughout the school year.
The school kicked off their Accelerated Reading program on Friday. The school has been participating in the program since it's doors opened in 1999.
Teachers and staff at the school say they aim for 100 percent participation. They say students of all ages are excited about the program.
“We do have some kindergartener readers as well, so we want to foster that and encourage them to go on and achieve above and beyond,” says Laura Hill with MLK Elementary School.
Albany State University’s band and cheerleaders helped the school celebrate the kick-off. The college’s royal court was there to help judge posters each grade made. ASU's band and cheerleaders performed to pump up the elementary school students.
