Surveillance cameras also damaged
ALBANY, GA -- "Where can you go now?" asked Nettie Johnson, a customer of the First State Bank of Albany. "All this crime – it’s very frightening, very frightening."
That was her reaction when she arrived at the bank on Tuesday morning.
"When I pulled up, I saw you and the cops and the yellow script and I got to the door and saw the sign, I was like, what happened?" she said.
What happened is that around 7:00am, another customer stopped by the bank to use the ATM and discovered that it was gone.
Albany police were soon on the scene.
"What we know at this point is that some pretty heavy machinery was used to remove the ATM from the bank," said Phyllis Banks-Whitley, Public Information Officer for the Albany Police Department.
In addition, several of the bank’s surveillance cameras were damaged, indicating that the culprits intend to make finding them as difficult a task as possible for police.
"They’re going to assess what surveillance they can obtain at this point but right now, it’s not going to be a lot," said Banks-Whitley.
As for those responsible, Miss Johnson has a simple message.
"Shame, shame, shame," she said.
