ALBANY, GA -- Albany State University kicked off its First and Second Year Lecture Series with a program by United Nations economist Mariangela Lancourt.
She believes that educating the next generation about the global marketplace and urging them to get involved is essential to worldwide economic stability.
"Knowledge and education and programs like this university can make a difference in the future," said Lancourt.
One example is ASU’s passport initiative, where students are encouraged to apply for a passport as a first step to becoming part of the larger world.
"Getting the passport is very symbolic because it’s not only about traveling abroad but being aware of what’s going on," said Lancourt.
One of the messages delivered to the students here at Albany State and to Southwest Georgia is the importance of technology, especially the internet. Social media like Facebook and Twitter can be invaluable tools for staying connected to the global marketplace.
"Embrace technology," said Lancourt. "Don’t be afraid of what’s going on in social media."
Senior David King thinks that message is getting across to Southwest Georgia.
"I think the region as a whole has become more aware, as she stated, with the integration of e-commerce," said King. "You know, buying things is a click of the button away now."
