ATLANTA (AP) -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has thrown his support behind Karen Handel in an Aug. 10 runoff for the Republican nomination for governor in Georgia.

Romney said Wednesday that Handel's "blend of executive, political, and business experience is just what Georgia needs at this critical time." His political action committee donated $1,000 to her campaign.

Romney — a Republican candidate for president in 2008 — becomes the latest White House hopeful to weigh in on the Georgia contest.

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin last week came out in support of Handel and is credited with helping her surge to become the top GOP vote getter in Tuesday night's primary. Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is backing Handel's runoff opponent Nathan Deal.

Romney, Palin and Gingrich are all considering White House bids in 2012.
