ALBANY, GA. -- Today was the first day for a new batch of students in the pathway to the medical school program at Phoebe Northwest.

The eight undergrad students came to orientation to kickoff the four-week program, where they'll get a firsthand look at family medicine before they start applying to med school.

“We help them to enhance their application process, make them look good on paper so that when they do apply to medical school then they do have a better chance of gaining admission,” said Pathways program coordinator Jan Shiver.

“Research experience as well more time in the office, getting comfortable around doctors and patients and understanding how to be a good primary care physician,” said Benjamin Donnan, a student in the program.

This is the sixth year of the program. Organizers say 90-percent of pathway program students end up getting accepted to medical school.
