ATLANTA (AP) -- A 54-year-old Georgia man was sentenced to 10 years in federal court on charges that he tried to hire a hit-man for $2,000 to commit murder.

Prosecutors say Juan Hernandez offered $5,000 to a confidential informant in April 2009 to kill an unnamed target. But the informant instead chose to tell the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Hernandez in May 2009 negotiated with undercover ATF agents to pay $2,000 for the murder.

An agent said in an affidavit that Hernandez asked that the victim's eyes be cut out during the murder and that he would have done the killing himself if he was younger or lived in Mexico.

Hernandez was arrested on May 27, 2009, and convicted in March of using a facility of interstate commerce with the intent of murder.
