GA nuclear power plant
(AP) -- Opponents of expanding a nuclear power station in Georgia are returning to court as they try to overturn a law allowing Georgia Power Co. to charge its customers for two new reactors before they start operating. A hearing in the case is set for Friday morning in Fulton County Superior Court.
The law approved last year allows Georgia Power to bill its customers for the finance costs of the new reactors at Plant Vogtle starting next year. The company says the law will shave about $300 million off an estimated $14 billion project.
Critics, including the Fulton County Taxpayers Foundation and the Southern Alliance For Clean Energy, say the law is unconstitutional and want a judge to strike it down.
