Be careful if you’re using your debit card.  That electronic money could end up costing you more than a tank of gas.

Working with your bank, most gas stations place a hold on your checking account for a predetermined amount, going as high as $100.

The best way to avoid the problem is to head inside.  If you use your pin number with the cashier, the transaction registers for the sales amount only; no extra hold on your account.
