Phoebe Putney is appealing the decision made by the Department of Community Health that is allowing Palmyra Medical Center to offer obstetrics.

Phoebe Putney president and CEO, Joel Wernick says the hearing will be next week in Atlanta. Wernick says, "Our hospital along with our hospital in Americus have services that are not fully utilized and the volume of patients that have been served pretty much has remained the same for the past 20 years, so the need for additional OB beds is just not there.

Wernick also noted the transitional ceremony for the new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center went well, saying folks in Americus are ready for a new hospital. The original Sumter Regional Hospital was devastated by the March first tornadoes.
