(AP) -- Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin is proposing a city budget that would call for increasing property taxes by $20 a month for the average homeowner in Atlanta.
She said the city needs the money because it is receiving far less money from sales taxes and other fees because of the economic recession. The proposal would restore most of its employees, including police officers and firefighters, to their normal 40-hour-a-week schedule. The mayor cut work hours and pay by 10 percent in December to manage through the city's current budget shortfall.
Atlantas budget year runs from July 1st to June 30th. The City Council must approve the budget by June 30th.
