Lawmakers cited Jerome White's separate conviction on a burglary charge

(AP) -- The Georgia Senate has moved to cut the state payout to a Georgia man who spent almost three decades in prison for a rape DNA tests later showed he didn't commit.

Lawmakers cited Jerome White's separate conviction on a burglary charge.  The Senate Appropriations Committee on Monday voted 12-8 to reduce White's compensation from the $709,000 originally awarded by the House to $500,000.  The money would be paid out over 20 years.

The 48-year-old White was convicted in 1979 of raping a Meriwether County woman. He was released in 2007 after DNA testing
exonerated him.  The full Senate still must approve the resolution.
