Officials to assess tornado damage to mental hospital in southwest Georgia

Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine plans to meet with officials of the Department of Human Resources to assess
tornado damage to a mental hospital in southwest Georgia.

Oxendine said he saw the damage to Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville only from the air on Monday but a tour of the
interior of the 420-bed facility could reveal that repairs might cost millions of dollars.  He said he would consult with DHR
officials on Tuesday.

The commissioner said his "conservative estimate" of insured losses to about 100 homes, commercial agricultural buildings and other structures in Thomas County and neighboring Grady County is $10 million.  That raises the estimate of statewide damage from last week's
twisters to $35 million.
