The Georgia House of Representatives passed a bill Thursday morning that would let voters decide whether or not to consolidate Albany and Dougherty County governments.

House Bill 800 is sponsored by Representative Ed Rynders (R-Leesburg) and Representative Carol Fullerton (D-Albany).  Representative Winfred Dukes (D-Albany) spoke out against the bill before Thursday’s vote.  Now the measure goes to the Georgia Senate where Senator Freddie Powell-Sims must support the bill for senators to vote on HB800.  If Powell-Sims signs on, the bill would set up a referendum vote for Dougherty County residents. Voters would decide whether or not the city and county governments consolidate.

HB800 passed 94-33.
