ALBANY, GA --
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared this the "Georgia School Choice Week," but what makes a student eligible to participate in picking their choice?

Dougherty County School System Public Information Officer RD Harter says locally, parents can send their child to a magnet or charter school on a space available basis.

Each high school has its own specialty and "feeder" schools that prepare students for an education in a certain field.

Albany High School has an honors, law and multimedia specialty that gets its students from Lincoln Elementary Magnet School, Robert A. Cross Magnet Middle School, and Sherwood Acres Elementary School.

Dougherty Comprehensive High has a specialty in fine and performing arts and international baccalaureate. It gets its students from Radium Springs Middle Magnet School of the Arts, Radium Springs Elementary and Dougherty International Education Middle School.

Monroe High School has a STEM or science, technology, engineering and math speciality that gets students from Southside Middle School and West Town Elementary School.

Westover High has a medical arts concentration with students coming in from Merry Acres Middle and Lake Park Elementary.

Harter says if a student shows an interest in any of these specialties, a parent can contact the Board of Education offices for an application to send their child to one of these schools. Harter says acceptances will be based on the availability.
