ALBANY, GA --
The Albany Housing Authority passed a non-smoking policy for all properties going into affect January 1st, 2013.

The policy will restrict residents from smoking inside their homes, with proper smoking areas set up outside. Executive Director Dan McCarthy says these new regulations will be beneficial for the Housing Authority and the health of its residents.

"In alot of cases this is going to create some issues for them that they've got to figure out how to deal with, we think in the larger view it's in the best interest of the Housing Authority that we don't have smoking inside our apartments," said McCarthy.

Several residents were in attendance and asked the board to institute a program to help them quit smoking. The board agreed and will be looking into it in the coming months.
