ALBANY, GA -- Chehaw Park received an award from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for their work in healthy forest management.

Their “Certified Forest Steward” award acknowledges the park’s work in maintaining undeveloped forest land that acts as a natural watershed filter and promotes clean air.

Chehaw also conducts prescribed burning and thinning to help promote a healthy ecosystem and provide a habitat for wild species. According to Chehaw officials, the continued maintenance and enhancement of the forest landscape in the park provides refuge for animals and place; they say the Gopher Tortoise, a state threatened species, as several active burrows in the park.

Chehaw says they continue to allow scientific research at the park to enhance the ecological understanding of the area.
