With flu season quickly approaching, the Southwest Georgia Public Health District is beginning to distribute flu vaccinations to the public
The Dougherty County Health Department says they are highly encouraging people to get their flu shot now
DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- It may still feel like summer but it’s time to start getting your flu shot in preparation for the cold and flu season.
The vaccination last a whole year, but don't take full effect until two weeks after you receive it. That's why public health officials are urging people to come in now for their vaccine.
“I know to get a flu shot every year advised by my personal health care physician and I'm comfortable with it that I'm protected,” says Henry Waters, who received his flu shot on Thursday.
Public health officials say because flu viruses are constantly changing, flu vaccines are updated from one season to the next to protect against the most recent and commonly circulating viruses.
They say young children, people 65 or older, pregnant woman and people with weakened immune systems can get much sicker from the flu so should definitely consider getting the vaccination.
One person can spread the flu to nearly 20 other people, according to public health officials.
The Dougherty County Health Department offers both the injection and spray versions of the vaccine. Flu vaccines cost $25 per dose.
