Original Story: Albany Police are looking for a group of thieves who held up the Albany Deli and Food mart on Westover Blvd. on Saturday afternoon.
The store clerk who was on duty says when the robbery happened he was doing his everyday routine of restocking shelves, but when the he stepped into the stock room, his day by day routine changed.
The victim who only wants to be recognized as Terrence says the robbers came in covered and armed.
“They were calm. They weren't belligerent, or cussing at me or nothing like that,” said Store Clerk Terrence.
He says the thieves told him to head towards the front of the store and that's what he did.
When the thieves forced the clerk from the back, he says they didn't even ask him to put his hands up. They were so concerned with money that they went straight to the register then the lotto machine for money.
“After he got all the money he was like where is your phone. I showed him the phone and he went and shot the phone,” said Terrence.
The gunshot busted a hole into the machine so that no one could call for help. The suspects then snatched the cash and turned to the clerk for one last request.
“Oh yea you got a gun. Let me get that gun too,” said Terrence.
Before customers made it inside, the crooks fled, leaving a trail of T-shirt and jeans in their path.
For the owner of the store, these incidents are happening all too frequently. One happened back in 2008 and two occurred within the same week in 2010. After adding cameras and burglar bars, he says he assumed the robberies would stop.
“We have the security system but I guess it keeps happening. We're not the only store. It's happening everywhere,” said store owner Jolly Singh.
It's something that the cashier believes can't be predicted. He says it apart of the trade.
“This is my job and any job that you get, you do know the responsibilities and the consequences of working in this type of business,” said Terrence.
Representatives for the Albany Police Department are asking anyone with information on this case to contact the authorities.
