LEESBURG, GA -- They got up early and braved the heat, but dozens of runners took part in 5K in Lee County Saturday morning.

It’s was the inaugural Walter Phelps Memorial Phun Run.

About 100 runners completed race dedicated to Phelps, who was murdered last year at his Albany business.

“We decided that we wanted to give something back to the community that he loved and carryon his legacy of being successful in endeavors. He started his business from scratch and we thought this would be a good way to honor his memory and to keep something good going in the community as well,” said Leighnne Aaron, Phelps’ daughter who helped organize the race.

Organizers hope the race will be an ongoing tradition. All the proceeds from registration will go to the Lee County YMCA day camp summer program.
