A Lee County citizen asks the Board of Commissioners to put the Sunday alcohol sales referendum on the November ballot
LEE COUNTY, GA -- A Lee County citizen addressed the Board of Commissioners asking them to add the Sunday alcohol sales referendum to be placed on November’s ballot.
Tim Nelson says the vote on the issue should be placed in the hands of the citizens.
“You elect officials to make decisions but when you're given the opportunity to vote on something that's such a grassroots and important issue to certain people and certain groups it's best to get the entire community to vote and that the biggest thing I'm asking for,” says Nelson.
He also says the referendum give them an opportunity to keep tax dollars in Lee County instead of people possibly going to Dougherty County to spend money.
“You've got to drive by so many curb stores before you get to Albany before you even get to the lake, so people would do it,” says Nelson.
Chairman Ed Duffy says no one has approached them before with interest in adding the referendum to the November ballot, which is why the board has not discussed it previously. He says the board will address the issue in the near future.
