Events locally and across country will highlight the importance of Americans giving back to their local communities to support their neighbors in need at a time when many families and individuals continue to struggle to make ends meet.
ALBANY, GA -- Nationwide, The Salvation Army is taking this week to say thank you to their volunteers and donors.
The organization is celebrating the 58th annual National Salvation Army Week this week with various events.
In Albany, volunteers at the Salvation Army serve meals and work in the family store. More than 70 volunteer at A Place for Hope.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower started National Salvation Army week in 1954.
“It's a chance for us to celebrate not really the Salvation Army but the people who make the Salvation Army what it is: Our volunteers and our donors. It’s a chance to say thank you, a chance to just show appreciation for the people who do the real work behind the scenes who usually don't get the credit,” says Capt. Doug McClure with The Salvation Army.
Tuesday, The Salvation Army will have Family Store Appreciation Day, offering visitors 10 percent off. On Thursday, there will be a Volunteer Appreciation Open House from 5:30 until 7 p.m. giving the public an opportunity to see inside the works of the organization in downtown Albany.

The very first National Salvation Army Week was declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower between November 18 and December 4, 1954 as a reminder to Americans that they should give freely of themselves.
"We are excited for the opportunity to say thank you to the army behind the Army." Captain McClure went on to say, "We could not be Doing the Most Good here in Albany without the support of our donors and volunteers."
In Albany, GA Salvation Army Week will be recognized with a Family Store Appreciation Day on Tuesday, May 10, and a Volunteer Appreciation Open House on Thursday, May 12, from 5:30-7pm.

Since 1919 when The Salvation Army began its social service work in the greater Albany area, the organization has grown into one of the largest social service providers in the country, directly supporting nearly 30 million Americans each year through a variety of programs. Local programs include emergency shelter, community feeding program, emergency utility assistant, food bank, clothing pantry, disaster response, character-building programs for children and summer camp scholarships.
