Pharmacy school in Albany

ALBANY, GA -- The University of Georgia is expanding it's campus to the Albany area. On Wednesday the school held a ribbon cutting ceremony inside Phoebe's Learning Center for its College of Pharmacy.

A representative for the university said that this region has always had a shortage of pharmacists.  He's hoping this new venture will bring more pharmacists to this area.

"Our goal has been to train at least 25 students per year, having a total of 50 students down here," said University of Georgia  College of Pharmacy Dean Dr. Svein Oie.

The new clinical campus is accented with black and red throughout the halls and classroom.  The school plans to hire faculty from across the nation to complete the staff but they want to use local pharmacists to train fourth year students.

"Having students in clinical settings makes existing pharmacists excited about their jobs," said Phoebe President and CEO Joel Wernick.

He's hoping these students will find a job after school in Albany and build a life here.

"When you have people come to stay here they spend money here. They are part of the local community," said Wernick.
