The Marine base has a wild side few people have seen
Sightseers can catch a glimpse of hens, turkey vultures and even alligators on the marine base
ALBANY, GA -- Marines aren't the only ones who call the Marine Corps Logistics Base home.
Not many people know there are all kinds of wildlife on board the marine base; turkey vultures, turkey buzzards, deer, raccoons, and snakes just to name a few. It's Al Belanger's job as game warden to manage the wildlife and natural resources, mostly from the law enforcement aspect. Belanger makes sure hunters that come on base are in compliance with state and federal regulations. He also conducts deer census. But sometimes his job gets real interesting.
“A lady left her door open and had a possum come into her house and start eating her cat food and decided to take a nap inside, under her couch. So then we had to go in and move that animal,” Recalls Belanger.
The base is federally mandated to maintain these natural resources, which includes a 90 acre peat bog where sightseers can catch a glimpse of hens, turkey vultures and even an alligator or two.
The base also attracts biologists from out of town—helping preserve wildlife on base as well as providing a boom to the local economy.
