Monday 2500 doses of the injectable H1N1 vaccine arrived in Southwest Georgia, yesterday they were distributed to the district’s 14 counties, and today the shots were administered to the public.

Some waited four plus hours to receive the injectable H1N1 vaccine at the Dougherty County Health Department, but say it was worth the wait.

At the Southwest District Health Department, Director of Nurses and Clinical Services Kitty Bishop says, the H1N1 problem isn’t going away and advices those who are eligible for the shot should get one, and wants to reassure the public of the shot’s safety.

“Maybe soreness at the injection site, maybe some upper respiratory symptoms that come along with it, but for the most part, side effects are minimal,” says Bishop.

While many are eligible for the injectable shot, senior citizens are not just yet.

“We have low incidents of H1N1 in the senior citizen population, which would be those that are over 64.  It will be available to that group, they’re just not in the priority groups that the CDC has given us at this time,” says Bishop.
