WFXL originally signed onto the airwaves in 1982 as WTSG-TV and was South Georgia’s first independent television station. WTSG became a FOX affiliate in November 1989 and changed its call letters to WFXL. In March 2006, then owner Raycom Media announced the sale of WFXL and 11 other TV stations to Barrington Broadcasting.
On June 1, 2006, a military helicopter traveling from Savannah, Georgia to Alabama for a training mission hit a guy wire connected to WFXL's 1000 foot tall tower in Doerun, resulting in a crash. While the tower remained standing and intact, WFXL was forced to temporarily cease its over-the-air signal, though cable broadcasts were not affected.
On June 7, 2006, WFXL's tower was demolished. The new WFXL state of the art mega-tower was completed 13 months later and began broadcasting in early July 2007. WFXL broadcasts over the air on several local cable networks as well as in high definition. The main studio, business offices, and technical support facilities are located at 1201 Stuart Avenue in Albany.
The WFXL news operation uses the latest technology to gather information from throughout South Georgia and the region. WFXL’s award winning news department has become a major contender in the market on a daily basis by focusing on local news and events that affect the community. Hardly a day goes by that our news team doesn’t break an exclusive story or two that can be seen only on WFXL. We center our news coverage on the things that affect our viewers; crime prevention, healthcare, education, and local governments just to name a few.
Severe weather is never to be taken lightly in South Georgia. With this in mind, WFXL purchased the most technologically advanced and powerful computerized weather system available in 2007. Our new weather system offers live Doppler Weather Radar as well as an automated severe weather warning system that is activated within seconds of any and all weather alerts from the National Weather Service. We fully realize that seconds count when it comes to possibly saving lives and we are committed to being first in severe weather coverage. When severe weather breaks out, we break in.
WFXL’s sports department is second to none in the market. As with our news department, our sports team capitalizes on local and regional sports coverage; all the way from high school games to the pros. Our sports team also produces several half hour high school football specials that run periodically each fall.
WFXL is a community-driven station! We partner with a number of local organizations, schools, charities, and county and city governments to promote and better the community as a whole. We also participate in public events such as parades, home shows, community leader forums, health and safety fairs and various other community celebrations.
Now after 35 years of broadcasting, WFXL has become the primary source for news, information and entertainment in South Georgia. WFXL is the viewers’ choice and we’re proud to be ‘your’ choice.
